Where to Walk

“Abu Usaid al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) reported that once the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) came out of the Masjid. On the street men and women were walking very close together. When he saw this he said, ‘O women! Get in the back. You should walk on the side of the street rather than in the middle.’” [Abu Dawud, Baihaqui]

The narrator reported that afterwards the women became so careful about walking on the sides of the streets that their clothes rubbed against the walls on the sides of the streets. (In those days the streets were narrow with houses on both sides.)

To prevent mixing up of men and women in public spaces, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) also prohibited a man to walk between two women. [Abu Dawud]
