Watching Television Makes Children Unhealthier

An increasing number of parents today are using the television as an ‘electronic babysitter’, according to evidence. Some parents tell their children that watching too much TV will make their eyes go square and, although this is not true, evidence is emerging that watching too much TV as a child could mean they end up with a larger waistline.

A new study, featured in BioMed Central’s open access journal International Journal of Behavioral nutrition and Physical Activity, has discovered that children’s muscular fitness decreases the more hours young children spend in front of the television and that their waist lines become larger as they approach their teens, which can have potential health consequences in their adulthood.

  • According to recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics, children below the age of two years old should not exceed more than two hours of television per day, yet more and more parents appear to use the TV as an ‘electronic babysitter’.

    Researchers from Montreal University in Canada decided to investigate whether the number of hours spent watching TV during early childhood is linked to lower subsequent physical fitness once these children are at school.

    The team used participants from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, and surveyed the children’s parents asking them to report the number of hours their child watched TV per week at the age of 29 and 53 months. Given that muscle strength and abdominal fat are associated with the level of fitness, the researchers examined the children in the second and fourth grade by measuring their waist circumference and using the standing long jump test.

    They discovered that for each hour per week of watching TV at the age of 29 months, children scored 0.361 cm less in the Standing Long Jump, which suggests a lower muscle strength compared with those who watched less television at that age. By increasing the weekly TV exposure by just one extra hour between the age of 29 and 53 months predicted an additional 0.285 cm less in the test. Another important finding was the fact that waist circumference at fourth grade increased by 0.047 cm for every hour of television watched between the ages of 29 and 53 months, which translates to a 0.41 cm larger waistline by the age of 10, or a 0.76 cm larger waistline in those who watched over 18 hours of TV a week.

    The result could predict that those children who spend an excessive amount of time in front of the TV as a child could experience negative health outcomes in their later life due to their larger waistline and lower muscle strength, as physical fitness is directly associated with future health and longevity.

    Leading researcher, Dr Caroline Fitzpatrick from New York University who performed the study at Montreal University and Saint-Justine’s Hospital Research Centre, concluded:

    “TV is a modifiable lifestyle factor, and people need to be aware that toddler viewing habits may contribute to subsequent physical health. Further research will help to determine whether amount of TV exposure is linked to any additional child health indicators, as well as cardiovascular health.”

(5) Show us the straight path, (6) The path of those whom Thou hast favoured. Not (the path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray. (7)

    மக்கீ, வசனங்கள்: 7
    1:1 بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
    1:1. அளவற்ற அருளாளனும், நிகரற்ற அன்புடையோனுமாகிய அல்லாஹ்வின் திருப்பெயரால்(துவங்குகிறேன்)

    1:2 الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
    1:2. அனைத்து புகழும், அகிலங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் படைத்து வளர்த்துப் பரிபக்குவப்படுத்தும் (நாயனான) அல்லாஹ்வுக்கே ஆகும்.
    1:3 الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

    1:3. (அவன்) அளவற்ற அருளாளன் நிகரற்ற அன்புடையோன்.

    1:4 مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
    1:4. (அவனே நியாயத்) தீர்ப்பு நாளின் அதிபதி(யும் ஆவான்).

    1:5 إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
    1:5. (இறைவா!)உன்னையே நாங்கள் வணங்குகிறோம்; உன்னிடமே நாங்கள் உதவியும் தேடுகிறோம்.

    1:6 اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
    1:6. நீ எங்களை நேர்வழியில் நடத்துவாயாக!

    1:7 صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ
    1:7. (அது) நீ எவர்களுக்கு அருள் புரிந்தாயோ அவ்வழி. (அது) உன் கோபத்திற்கு ஆளானோர் வழியுமல்ல நெறி தவறியோர் வழியுமல்ல.

    112:1. (நபியே?!) நீர் கூறுவீராக: அல்லாஹ் அவன் ஒருவனே.

    112:2. அல்லாஹ் (எவரிடத்தும்) தேவையற்றவன்.

    112:3 لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
    112:3. அவன் (எவரையும்) பெறவுமில்லை; (எவராலும்) பெறப்படவுமில்லை.

    112:4 وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
    112:4. அன்றியும், அவனுக்கு நிகராக எவரும் இல்லை.

    { الحمد لله } جملة خبرية قصد بها الثناء على الله بمضمونها من أنه تعالى : مالك لجميع الحمد من الخلق أو مستحق لأن يحمدوه، والله علم على المعبود بحق { ربِّ العالمين } أي مالك جميع الخلق من الإنس والجن والملائكة والدواب وغيرهم، وكل منها يُطلق عليه عالم، يقال عالم الإنس وعالم الجن إلى غير ذلك، وغلب في جمعه بالياء والنون أولي العلم على غيرهم، وهو من العلامة لأنه علامة على موجده.

    أي الجزاء وهو يوم القيامة ، وخص بالذكر لأنه لا ملك ظاهرًا فيه لأحد إلا الله تعالى بدليل {لمن الملك اليوم؟ لله} ومن قرأ مالك فمعناه الأمر كله في يوم القيامة أو هو موصوف بذلك دائمًا {كغافر الذنب} فصح وقوعه صفة لمعرفة.

    { إيَّاك نعبد وإياك نستعين } أي نخصك بالعبادة من توحيد وغيره ونطلب المعونة على العبادة وغيرها.

    { صراط الَّذين أنعمت عليهم } بالهداية ويبدل من الذين بصلته {غير المغضوب عليهم} وهم اليهود { ولا } وغير { الضالِّين } وهم النصارى ونكتة البدل إفادة أن المهتدين ليسوا يهوداً ولا نصارى . والله أعلم بالصواب، وإليه المرجع والمآب، وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد وعلى اَله وصحبه وسلم تسليما كثيراً دائما أبداً، وحسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل، ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم.

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم


    سئل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن ربه فنزل: { قل هو الله أحد } فالله خبر هو وأحد بدل منه أو خبر ثان.

    Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;

    (நபியே!) நீர் கூறுவீராக: அல்லாஹ் அவன் ஒருவனே.

    { الله الصمد } مبتدأ وخبر أي المقصود في الحوائج على الدوام.

    Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;

    அல்லாஹ் (எவரிடத்தும்) தேவையற்றவன்.

    { لم يلد } لانتفاء مجانسته { ولم يولد } لانتفاء الحدوث عنه.

    He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;

    அவன் (எவரையும்) பெறவுமில்லை (எவராலும்) பெறப்படவுமில்லை.

    { ولم يكن له كفواً أحد } أي مكافئًا ومماثلاً، وله متعلق بكفوًا، وقُدِّم عليه لأنه مَحطُّ القصد بالنفي وأَخَّر أحد وهو اسم يكن عن خبرها رعاية للفاصلة.

  • Modesty before Allah

    The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Be modest before Allah as it is proper to be modest.” The Sahabah said: “We are modest before Allah, and for this we thank Him.” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “This is not modesty. The modesty that should be before Allah demands that you keep your head and all parts safe from falsehood, keep your belly and your food safe from the forbidden things, and remember the condition of death and that of the grave; and he who wants to love the life of the Hereafter, should give up the embellishments and grandeur of worldly life, and should prefer the Hereafter to the world. He who has done so, he has, as if, fulfilled the right of being modest before Allah.” [Tirmidhi]

  • We try to display our best conduct and behaviour in the presence of those whom we consider great and whom we want to please. Before them, we speak only when necessary. Every step that we take before them is with caution and fear.

    A Muslim whose religion teaches him that he is never away from the sight of Allah, because he is in His presence day and night, is more awed by Allah than he is by important people and more careful not to displease Him than he is cautious about displeasing important people. He is therefore, more careful to obey Him than he is concerned about obeying the important people in his life.

    If a person conducts his life with the consciousness that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is watching him, and if he hates to be lax and defective in matters concerning Allah, then he has fulfilled the right of being modest before Allah.
