The holy Koran (Quraan shareef) consists of verses called aayat-e-sajdah, verses of prostration, on which it is obligatory to prostrate (make a sajdah) at the end either after having read or listened the verse.
One should prostrate as we usually do in namaz (swalaat) by starting with the standing posture and by finishing it in the same way, i.e. in the standing position. In clear, if the aayat-e-sajdah is being read during namaz, we automatically perform the sajdah in the namaz, but when are reading the Quraan shareef while seated, we must put the Quraan aside, stand up to perform the sajdah (from standing to standing) and after the sajdah, sit down again to continue to read the Quraan. However, if we are reciting the Quraan by heart (without wazu) or whilst walking or doing another action, we can postpone the sajdah for later on but it remains faraz (obligatory) on us (lifetime).
However, a student who is learning the Quraan by heart (making haafiz) can recite an aayat-e-sajdah several times to be able to memorize it but will owe only one sajda-e-tilaawat.
During the sajdah (prostration) one should read the same wazifah (recitation) as during namaz i.e. 3 (or 5) times “subhaana rabbiyal a’laa” (Glory to my Lord the very high). These verses of prostration are of 14 in the holy Koran with this small precision that the Hanafis do not perform the one which is marked with one * whereas the Shafi’is do not perform the one which is marked with two **, see the list hereafter:
