Practice What You Preach

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “A man will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire. Then his entrails will be spilled out into the Fire, and he will be forced to walk around and around like a donkey in a mill. The people of Hell will gather around him and will say, ‘O So-and-so, what is wrong with you? Did you not enjoin us to do good and forbid us to do evil?’ He will say, ‘I used to order you to do good, but I did not do it myself, and I used to forbid you to do evil, but I used to do it myself.’ Then he will walk around and around like a donkey in a mill.” [Bukhari]

This hadith warns us to practice what we preach. If a person helps to bring others into Allah’s obedience he/she will be rewarded equally for all the good deeds the other person does and all the bad deeds that the other person refrains from. Some people think that with all the credit they might be getting they do not need to bother with their own conduct. The above mentioned hadith describes clearly what the end is of those who neglect themselves. Read the rest of this entry »

Plant a Tree

thamz bismillah

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Never a Muslim plants a tree, but he has the reward of charity for him; for what is eaten out of that is charity, what is stolen out of that, what the beasts eat out of that, what the birds eat out of that, is charity for him.” [Bukhari]

Plant a tree, preferably a fruit tree. Don’t worry about whether you get to enjoy its fruits or not. Let bird, beast and man benefit from it. Without even realizing how much, you will be accruing good deeds in your account. Read the rest of this entry »

Abdullah bin Salam becomes a Muslim (II)

“Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu) said: ‘O Allah’s Messenger; the Jews are liars, and if they should come to know that I have embraced Islam, they will accuse me of being a liar.’ In the meantime some Jews came (to the Prophet) and he asked them, ‘What is Abdullah’s status amongst you?’ They replied, ‘He is the best amongst us, and he is our chief and the son of our chief.’ The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘What would you say if Abdullah bin Salam embraced Islam?’ They replied, ‘May Allah protect him from this!’ Then Abdullah came out and said, ‘I testify that La ilaha illAllah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and that Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) is the Messenger of Allah.’ The Jews then said, ‘Abdullah is the worst of us, and the son of the worst of us,’ and disparaged him. On that Abdullah said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! This is what I was afraid of.’” [Sahih Bukhari] Read the rest of this entry »
