Jum’ah Prayer Etiquette:
“O believers, when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, come to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business, that is better for you if you but did know.” [Al-Jumuah, 62:9]
Rasul Allah s.a.w. (Sallahu Alaihi Wassalam) said: “Let those who neglect attending Friday prayer, stop doing so, or Allah will seal their heart and they will be of the heedless.” Muslim
Rasul Allah s.a.w. said: “the best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Jannah, on it he was expelled from it (Jannah), and the Last Hour will not take place, except on Friday.” Muslim
Clean yourself by taking a bath or shower, use scent/perfume, do not force your way, and …..
Rasul Allah s.a.w. said, “Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil (on his hair) or scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way between two persons (assembled in the mosque for the Friday prayer), and prays as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven.” Bukhari
Wear the best clothes:
The Prophet s.a.w. said, “If one has the means, he should buy two pieces of clothing, other than his work clothes or [everyday clothing], to wear on Friday.” Abu Dawud
Go early to the Masjid:
The Prophet s.a.w. said, “When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumuah prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba.” Muslim
Do not run:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Rasul Allah (s.a.w.) said: “If the prayer is started do not run for it but just walk for it calmly and pray whatever you get, and complete whatever is missed ” Bukhari
Sitting in someone else’s place:
Narrated Ibn Juraij: I heard Nafi’ saying, “Ibn Umar, said, ‘The Prophet forbade that a man should make another man to get up to sit in his place’ “. I said to Nafi’, ‘Is it for Jumuah prayer only?’ He replied, “For Jumuah prayer and any other (prayer).” Muslim
Two short rakaat on entering during khutbah:
Rasul Allah (s.a.w.) said:” When any one of you comes on Friday while the Imam delivers the Khutbah, he should observe two rakaats and should make them short.” Muslim
Keep quiet and listen to Khutbah:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Rasul Allah (s.a.w.) said, “When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done laghw.” Bukhari . Imam Bukhari explained that we have to be totally quiet.
One should not perform Sunnah Prayer after Jumuah Prayer until one talks to someone or step out of the Masjid.
An hour /short/limited time – a dua will be answered:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Rasul Allah (s.a.w.) talked about Friday and said, “There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand.” And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands. “ Buchari
The time has been kept secret, so we, the Muslims can devoted ourselves, as we do for Lailatul Qadr (the Night of Decree/Power). There are two agreed upon quotations:
1. The time is during the Imam giving a Khutbah until the end of Prayer and 2. between Asr and Sunset.
1. Rasul Allah s.a.w. said:” It is between the times when the Imam sits down until the end of the Jumuah (prayer)”
2. Narrated by Anas Bin Malik ( Rasul Allah s.a.w. said search for the Friday’s blessed hour between Asar and sunset)
Please do not block other cars in the parking lot. If you must, because of lack of parking spaces, please move your car as soon as the Jumuah prayer is over so that brothers and sisters that need to leave to their jobs, can quickly have access to their cars.
Please turn off your cell phone before entering the Masjid.
Please remove your shoes and place them in the cubby (slot) in the Masjid. Do not put the shoes on the bench.
As soon as we enter the Masjid, we should fill up the available space in the first, second, third row (and so on) in front of us first, then we perform the Sunnah Prayer.
Please maintain the serenity and the holiness of the masjid while we are waiting for the Khutbah to avoid disturbing brothers and sisters who are performing Sunnatul Masjid and reading Al Qur’an by:
* Not talking, except for emergency
* Not reciting Al Qur’an loudly
Performing Sunnah Prayer(s) after Jumuah should be done in the manner that we should not block other
Brothers and Sisters who have to leave the Masjid in a hurry to go back to heir jobs.
Help keep the masjid as clean as possible, kitchen, bathrooms, office, and especially Praying areas.
Jazakum Allah Khairun.
